Janine Pinion

My watercolour paintings involve building wet-in-wet layers to create deep tones and subtle blends. I work in series around a particular place or event, making studies and taking photographs, before the final works are distilled from memory and previous sketches and experiments. I’ve recently begun work on a larger scale and this involves a greater degree of physical movement and timing, which feels immersive and not unlike dance. The material properties of watercolour (granulation, stage of drying etc) interest me as much as the subject and each painting allows me to explore the possibilities and show some of that process in the final piece.
